Much has been written about the inarticulacy of ESPN writer Bill Simmons. The majority of sports fans find his long winded diatribes particularly confusing inasmuch as he moves from one broken train of thought to another with no advance notice. It's his niche in much the same way that Michael Richards new niche is overt racism. It's easy to blame Simmons education at Holy Cross and Boston University but that's not fair. Both colleges have excellent academic reputations. No. Simmons created his persona to sell himself and it worked. The value of propaganda, even in sports, is invaluable. Simmons realized it early on and used his pop culture references and love of all things New England to set himself apart from serious journalists. Adolph Hitler used the same tactics to distance himself from Germany's other leaders prior to 1933. It's nothing new. Now though the shtick has run it's course and Simmons is parodied by other journalists, sports fans, and athletes. He's running the risk of having his material judged solely on it's redeeming qualities of which there is very little to speak of if one views it with objectivity. Even his arcane references to his wife are old and tired. Bill, you ignorant blow-hard, reinvent yourself or soon you'll find that the only people that read your detritus are the wifey and family.
